How does the CPAP Machine know when you stop breathing?
A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine is a machine that helps monitor and manage your sleep during the night. These machines are uniquely set to each individual person and can be quite confusing to wrap your head around. Our team is here to answer a few questions you might have about CPAP Machines so you can have a better understanding of its workings. Let’s discuss!
What is a CPAP machine?
CPAP Machines are built for those who are struggling with bad sleep health and sleep apnea. They provide pressurized air through a mask and measure your breathing rate to ensure you’re getting the optimal amount of air to get a good night’s sleep. Normally, customers have a unique prescribed level of air pressure that gets monitored in the settings of the CPAP machine by your sleep specialist to ensure you’re getting the correct air flow for you. Room air (not oxygen) is taken in through a filter and pressurized accordingly.
How Does CPAP machine Know When to Alter the Air Pressure?
CPAP machines vary slightly, they are able to detect a collapse of the airway by measuring resistance and react to such by increasing the pressure for the subject during the night to properly resolve the sleep apnea. These devices will also test lower pressures and adjust downward if needed. CPAP machines can measure individuals breathing patterns and are looking for three things:
- 30 breaths of stable breathing (roughly 3 minutes)
- 5 consecutive snore breaths
- 3 obstructive apneas or hypopneas within 2 minutes
Once any of those signs occurs, AutoRamp steadily ramps up your air pressure at a comfortable rate until the machine reaches your prescribed level of air pressure. With lower pressures while you’re awake, and a steady, comfortable ramp-up to keep you and your partner sleeping, AutoRamp is one of many new features in the ResMed machines designed to make treatment more effective for a better night’s sleep.
As you sleep, the airstream from the CPAP machine pushes against any blockages, opening your airways so your lungs receive plenty of air. Without anything obstructing this flow of oxygen, your breathing doesn’t pause or get stuck. As a result, you don’t repeatedly wake up in order to resume breathing and can finally get the peaceful night sleep you’re needing.
